"Here's your weekly pay," the woman announced, sliding a small pouch across her desk. She marked a checkmark in her ledger without glancing up, then flicked her wrist dismissively. "Don't forget to pay your taxes... Next!"

Leon emptied the pouch into his palm and stared at nine tarnished coins—eight large, one small. His eyes went wide.

"Are you serious? I just stopped an evil god from consuming the world this Tuesday! You're actually cutting my salary, you greedy bastard?"

He looked ready to leap over that desk and throw down right then and there.
