Life in Ezzum once flowed peacefully until the Local authority disrupted everything with their new customs. The elders viewed this foreign order as deeply corrupt, and Obiageli became their voice, questioning a system where recipients of gifts must repay them in ignorance—a betrayal of the old ways.

While the elderly resisted fiercely, the youth embraced the changes with enthusiasm, though concerns about dignity loomed large. Ngozi Njoku and Nkoli embodied traditional values, preserving their honor until marriage, earning communal respect. Obiageli, however, watched her own dignity crumble under fear, unable to secure the benefits of motherhood she deserved. Her daughter Ijeoma, hardworking and devoted to her father's principles, eventually succumbed to forces beyond her control.

When Nwanyikwele arrived, she possessed the power to heal wounds before they festered, yet Nwosu's stubborn wisdom prevented intervention. Obiageli's attempts proved futile as old rejections continued haunting the spirit-touched.

Political tensions erupted when the strangers arrived with promises. The community eagerly offered their thumbprints, only discovering too late that the Chairman sought to consolidate power. Despite collective resolve to resist such manipulation, everything shifted when rumors of a captured masquerade spread. The Igwe and diviner journeyed to headquarters to reclaim it—a quest that would seal the community's fate.

During this desperate mission, the Local authority seized control. Nwanyikwele later revealed the truth behind their calamity, which paradoxically freed Ijeoma from her anguish. She had bargained with shame to reclaim her father's name after fleeing her husband's home. In the end, one of the strangers evaluating the community's suffering claimed Ijeoma for himself.
