imageThe next step is to determine what kind of window lock and handle you want to replace. This is vital!

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that can be fitted to casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. They come with a 7mm square spindle that fits into the gearbox on a uPVC window and when the handle is turned, it triggers with a series of locks that run around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles are also referred to as shootbolt handles and provide extra security compared to the typical single point lock found on older frames.

There are a range of options to choose from with cranked and inline handles that can be operated using either the right or left hand. There is also a variety of ergonomically designed handles that are designed to enhance the feeling of the handle as well as how it looks on your windows.

You will need to measure the size of the spindle from the base of your uPVC handle if you want to purchase the correct replacement. This measurement, known as the step height will assist you in selecting the ideal uPVC window handle for your home.

If you require to remove any screws that are holding the handle, you can use pliers or a screwdriver. After removing the pins or screws that hold the spindle together, you can disassemble the handle.

After removing the handle, you can open the locking mechanism inside the frame of the windows and remove the cockspur block located next to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The replacement uPVC handles you ordered will be able to slide onto the cockspur block before sliding into handle spindle to allow the window to open again. Ideally, you should replace the cockspur wedge block with a new one when changing your uPVC handle to ensure it is securely secured.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are typically found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle is closed and then turns onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable versions. They come in a range of different nose sizes to match the frame.

The handle locks by a slender spur (little triangle bit) pulling up against a wedge made of plastic that is fixed to the frame. They are usually one-way handles however a deadlock lock cylinder that locks can be fitted for additional security.

The replacement cockspur handles are easy to put in. All you need is the correct backset and a new set (supplied). The backset is the distance between the baseplate of the window to the underside of the nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are usually 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are many other variations however, so it is crucial to measure before buying the handle (see video below for how).

The spindle, or in certain cases the entire handle is removed by unwinding the handle. The replacement glass for windows handle is then installed by using a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screw is available in a brass or a zinc finish, to match the hardware you already have. There is also an option of self-locking pozidriv screws.

This cockspur handle is simple to install and is ideal to replace or repair old uPVC Windows. They feature an universal design, making them suitable for all profiles and backsets. Each handle comes with three packers, each of different thicknesses. These are neatly installed on the underside of handles and can be used together to make backsets as tiny as 9-13mm or as large 21mm. These handles are available in left and right-handed versions and in lockable and nonlockable models. They also come with a variety of nose heights.

Turn and Tilt

The premium European window style with tilt and turn has been popular in Europe for a long time, but it's only just beginning to gain popularity in the Americas. They combine the advantages of three window styles into one - tilt, pivot and in-swing. They are perfect for older homes as they offer more airflow than standard windows.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they are locked like any other fixed window. By turning the handle either 90or 180 degrees depending on the type of tilt-and turn window, the sash will open inwards and the window tilts inwards to allow for air circulation. This is a great option to let air circulate without the need to open a large windows, which could pose a security risk if it is not secured properly when opening.

The sash can be opened fully by turning the handle 90or 180@. This permits complete air exchange, which is particularly useful in rooms with a lot of draft or where smells or smoke are likely to accumulate. This makes it easier to clean the glass's outside by doing it from inside your home. This is a job that can be a risky task.

Tilt-and-turn windows are also secure. They are very difficult to open if locked in the closed position. They also have double seals that keep rainwater out of your home while it is in the tilted position or swing. This feature is particularly useful for older homes, where burglars tend to target windows that are opened with side hinges.

Spade

There are several kinds of window handles that can be installed to double glazed windows made of Upvc. There are two kinds of handles: Cockspur and Espag. Other options include tilt and turn handles as well as spade or blade handles, monkey tail handles and other types. The type of handle you pick will be based on your preferences and the type of windows you have.

It is important to know the way the handle you have currently is attached to the frame to select the correct replacement upvc handle. This is known as handing. It is a crucial aspect to know, particularly when purchasing online since some handles aren't suitable for all windows. Some handles, for instance, are angled whereas others are straight and can turn either left or installed right. You'll also need the spindle size that is the distance between the base of the handle and the head of the handle.

Another crucial aspect of selecting the right handle is determining whether your windows need a restrictor or not. They are generally employed in high-rise flats or commercial buildings, however they are not required for homes that are primarily residential. Additionally, you must consider step height which is the distance from the bottom of the screw plate to the top of the handle.

The word spade comes from Old English spadu or spaedu and has been translated into several languages, including German spaten and Low German Spathen. In the 1920s, during the Harlem Renaissance in New York City spade started to be used as a derogatory term for black people. Spade has since risen to prominence in pop culture and is a widely recognized symbol of African American heritage and pride.

When replacing the handle of a Cadenza style handle, it's crucial that you choose the right size. Handles are available in straight and angled versions that differ by a few microns. The handle head is available in a variety shapes such as the T or D shapes. It is also possible to be left unhandled.
