Arse was originally an inoffensive term that refers to an organ or part of the body. However it has since become a vulgar term. In the 19th century'ass was developed as an alternative to arse. It was originally a reference to the horse-like animal group,
White but in the 1860s it became an informal term for an a posterior. It is also used in the expression 'to snooze around'. Ass is also used in the phrase "to make an a** out of oneself as an association with 'to groan about'. There are many meanings for arse, which are not found in the word 'ass.
Appropriateness in popular culture
There are many instances in which a dominant culture adopts elements from a minority group's culture. This practice, called cultural appropriation, can cause feelings of disdain in minority groups. Whether it is wearing an Native American headdress at a music festival or wearing blackface on Halloween, a lot of Black people feel that this is a form of patronizing behavior.
A dominant group may also adopt elements from minority cultures. However, they can also use intellectual property of the minority group. This can be done by blackfishing for instance. It is important to remember that people with colored skin have a history of being excluded and marginalized. For example, when you see a person of color dressed in blackface for Halloween take into consideration the history of black people being excluded.
