Appropriateness in popular Culture
We often see cases where the dominant culture takes elements from a minority's culture. This practice, referred to as cultural appropriation can lead to disrespect from members of minority groups. Many Black people consider this patronizing practice, regardless of whether they are wearing the Native American headdress to a music festival or wearing blackface on Halloween.
In addition to incorporating elements of minorities' cultures, a dominant group can also make use of intellectual property belonging to the minority group. This can be done through blackfishing, for example. It is important to consider that people of color have a history of being disenfranchised and marginalized. Take, for instance, the history of the marginalization of black people when you see someone wearing costumes in blackface for Halloween.
