Appropriateness in popular Culture
In many cases, we witness instances when a dominant group of people takes elements from a minority group's culture. This practice, called cultural appropriation, can result in feelings of disdain in minority groups. Many Black people consider this patronizing act, whether it's wearing a Native American headdress to a music festival or blackface for Halloween.
A dominant group can adopt elements of minority cultures. However, they may also utilize intellectual property of the minority group. Blackfishing is just one instance. It is important to consider that people of color have a long history of being marginalized and deprived of rights. Think about, for instance, the history of black people being marginalized whenever you see someone wearing costumes in blackface for Halloween.
