Appropriateness in popular Culture
There are many instances where an dominant culture is able to adopt elements of the culture of a minority. This practice, known as cultural appropriation, can lead to feelings of disrespect among members of minority groups. It doesn't matter if you wear the traditional Native American headdress at a music festival or wearing blackface for Halloween, many Black people feel that it is a form of patronizing behavior.
In addition to incorporating aspects of minority cultures, a dominant group can also benefit from intellectual property of the minority group. This is done via blackfishing, as an example. It is important to consider that people with colored skin have a history of being marginalized and disenfranchised. For instance, if you see a black person dressed in blackface for Halloween take into consideration the history of black people being marginalized.
