The new model comes with the same excellent noise cancelling that is enhanced by four beamforming microphones for hands-free calls. The most obvious improvement is location awareness which adjusts the ambient sound control settings based on the location where you are. If you are sitting still at home they may switch to a subtler noise cancelling level than when you're on the train. They also play exterior audio so you're aware of the surroundings while walking around the town.
Multipoint is another feature that allows you to connect headphones to two devices simultaneously. This can be a lifesaver when you want to listen to music on your laptop and make calls on your phone. Multipoint isn't a feature that's available by default, however you can easily enable it by going to the Headphones Connect App's System tab. The downside is that when you enable multipoint, you'll are unable to utilize the high-quality Bluetooth LDAC codec.
The Sony WH1000XM5 has the same controls for touch like the WH1000XM4's. You can manage music playback and make phone calls. Swipe forward and backwards on the touchpad to skip tracks, or back and back and forth to pause or resume playback. The right earcup contains physical buttons for volume and power.

The earbuds are constructed of matte plastic. They have a somewhat bulky appearance that funnels down to drivers and are topped off with silicone tips. The earbuds are equipped with an IPX4 rating for water resistance, and are suitable for cycling or running.
