Disgruntled Shed of the Year contestants who spent thousands of pounds on their efforts have been left scratching their heads after a 'basic' budget DIY shed triumphed in their place.

The prestigious competition - which is held every year by Cuprinol and comes with a £1000 cash prize - was won by Archie Proudfoot's 'Frankenshed', a small colourful workspace made from recycled timber.

Judges were particularly impressed by Mr Proudfoot's aesthic details noting it showcased 'the highest levels of technicolour transformation' - but according to other contestants the effort put into the DIY budget shed pails in comparison to theirs.

In order to claim undisputed bragging rights over all back gardens in England, Schlagwörter Mr Proudfoot beat out competition from a 26 strong 'shedlist' featuring an A-frame ski chalet in Essex and fully functioning pub in the West Midlands.

And according to some contestants, the decision was not the correct one.

Mr Proudfoot - with Marianne Shillingford, Cuprinol's creative director - drew plaudits from the judges for his basic shed
