LiDAR and Robot Navigation

LiDAR is one of the essential capabilities required for mobile robots to navigate safely. It offers a range of capabilities, including obstacle detection and path planning.

LiDAR Device

The SLAM algorithm is the key to a robot's capability to build a map of its surroundings and locate it within the map. The evolution of the algorithm has been a key area of research for the field of artificial intelligence and mobile robotics. This paper reviews a variety of current approaches to solve the SLAM issues and discusses the remaining issues.

The primary objective of SLAM is to calculate the robot's movements in its environment while simultaneously constructing an accurate 3D model of that environment. The algorithms of SLAM are based upon features that are derived from sensor data, which could be laser or camera data. These characteristics are defined by points or objects that can be distinguished. These can be as simple or as complex as a corner or plane.

Most Lidar sensors have a restricted field of view (FoV), LiDAR Robot Navigation which can limit the amount of data available to the SLAM system. A larger field of view allows the sensor to capture a larger area of the surrounding area. This can lead to an improved navigation accuracy and a more complete map of the surrounding area.

A SLAM system is extremely complex and requires substantial processing power in order to function efficiently. This is a problem for robotic systems that need to run in real-time, or run on a limited hardware platform. To overcome these difficulties, a SLAM can be optimized to the hardware of the sensor and software. For instance a laser scanner with a high resolution and wide FoV may require more processing resources than a cheaper low-resolution scanner.

Map Building

A map is a representation of the world that can be used for a variety of reasons. It is typically three-dimensional and serves many different functions. It could be descriptive, indicating the exact location of geographic features, and is used in various applications, like the road map, or an exploratory one searching for patterns and connections between phenomena and their properties to uncover deeper meaning in a subject, such as many thematic maps.

Local mapping builds a 2D map of the surroundings using data from LiDAR sensors placed at the bottom of a robot, just above the ground level.
